  1. One difference:

    The Canadians tended to accept the British way and became a reliable and beneficial trading partner without Britain needing to actively mandate or participate in the Canadian's political processes.

    The U.S. wanted to establish their own cultural leanings which were in opposition to many of the British tenets.  So, an active conflict was needed to resolve this conundrum.

    imho.
