  1. The definition of adoption is; To take into one's family through legal means and raise as one's own child.

Guardianship or permanent care is when a child lives with someone and they take on all or most aspects of that person's care. Most often the person with guardianship is the primary caregiver, sometimes guardianship can be split between people. There may or may not be a legal agreement with guardianship. A guardian is most often a parent though if the parent is unable to properly care for the person or child guardianship may be awarded to another interested party or interested parties, either voluntarily or through the court system.

If someone is a "ward of the court" or a "ward of the state" then primary guardianship is held by either the court or state with a social worker appointed to act in that person's best interest. In cases such as this the primary caregiver may be someone other than the guardian such as a foster parent.
