Simmard and Newsdad to renew rivalry in the Grade 2 Pan American Stakes at Gulfstream Park
The 7-year-old Roger L. Attfield trained horse, Simmard, got the better of Newsdad in the 1 3/8 mile turf race at Gulfstream Park called the Grade 2 Mac Diarmida Stakes on 26 February, 2012, when Simmar dragged himself in the stretch and overhauled Newsdad
in the dying stages of the race.
The two older horses are set to clash and battle it out once again in the Grade 2, $150,000 Pan American Stakes, and a feature race of the Gulfstream Park Saturday card which has reeled in 4 other runners apart from the Mac Diarmida first two finishers.
Bill Mott trained 4-year-old colt, Newsdad, will have his chance to settle the score and atone for his defeat in the Mac Diarmida Stakes, and going into the race the Kentucky bred son of Arch, out of mare Storm Tracer by Pulpit, will have a slight advantage.
Newsdad will tote 117 pounds, while Simmard will have to carry jockey Patrick Husbands, along with 123 pounds, which could pan out in Newsdad’s favour.
James S. Karp owned Newsdad was exiting a victory in his seasonal debut prior to the Mac Diarmida Stakes in an allowance/optional claimer at about 1 7/16 miles at Gulfstream Park on 28 January, 2012, where he defeated the likes of Uptowncharlybrown in second
and Laureate Conductor in third, while he covered the distance in 2 minutes and 19.13 seconds.
While on the other hand, the Kentucky bred son of Dixieland Band, out of mare Dibs by Spectacular Bid, Simmard was making his seasonal debut in the Grade 2 Mac Diarmida Stakes, and it was a winning start to the new campaign.
Trainer Bill Mott is going to make the Pan American Stakes doubly difficult for Simmard to win the race by sending in another trainee of his, the fast improving, Harrods Creek. The 5-year-old Kentucky bred son of Langfuhr, out of mare Float And Sting by
Two Punch, Harrods Creek capped off his 2011 campaign with a strong second place finish in the Valedictory Stakes over at Woodbine’s synthetic surface.
It was a 5 race season, in which he landed two races, and placed two with a lone 5th place finish in the Grade 3 Kentucky Cup Turf.
