Simon Aspelin/Paul Hanley defeat Dustin Brown/Michael Kohlmann in the quarterfinals of BMW Open
Swedish/Australian duo of Simon Aspelin and Paul Hanley rallied past Dustin Brown and Michael Kohlmann of Germany in three sets 6-2, 3-6, 10-6 in the quarterfinals at the BMW Open in Munich on Wednesday.
Aspelin and Hanley thrashed their opponents in the opening set, breaking them twice to win the set 6-2.
The Swedish/Australian pair hit a single ace and 70 percent of the first serves in the opening set. They converted 68 percent of the first serves into points in the first set. In comparison, Brown and Kohlmann delivered three aces
and committed a single double fault. They fired 65 percent of the first serves in the opening set, winning 65 percent of the points on them. The German team could save just one of the three break points they faced in the first set.
After being bashed in the opening set, Brown and Kohlmann fought back in the second set. They broke Aspelin and Hanley in the sixth game and held their service in the next game to take a 5-2 lead. The German combination served
out the set at 5-3.
Brown and Kohlmann hit 75 percent of the first serves, winning 67 percent of the points on them in the second set. They did a tremendous job by saving all the five break points they faced in the second set. The German pair capitalized
on one of the three break point opportunities they created in the second set.
In the match tie-break, Aspelin and Hanley hit a couple of stunning shots to claim double mini-break and won the match tie-break 10-6.
The Swedish/Australian team fired an incredible 100 percent of the first serves, converting 75 percent of them into points in the match tie-break. On the other hand, the German combination kept their first serve percentage at 88
percent and clinched 57 percent of the points on the first serve. Brown and Kohlmann won just 25 percent of the first serve return points. While, Aspelin and Hanley claimed 43 percent of the first serve return points in the match tie-break. The match lasted
for one hour and 17 minutes.
In the first round, Aspelin and Hanley fought back from one set down to defeat German/Czech duo of Tommy Haas and Radek Stepanek in three sets 2-6, 6-3, 10-8.
This is the first tournament in which Aspelin and Hanley have teamed up together in 2011. Aspelin has not won any title so far this year. However, Hanley has already claimed two titles this season, partnering Lukas Dlouhy.
The Swedish/Australian pair is drawn to play either Italian/Argentinean pair of Simone Bolelli and Horacio Zeballos or Russian/Dutch team of Teymuraz Gabashvili and Rogier Wassen in the semi-finals.
