Simon Bedford, Tian Pengfei win tour cards beating Lee Walker and David Gilbert in Q School Event 2
Englishman Simon Bedford and China’s Tian Pengfei have qualified for the main tour of the 2011-12 snooker season after beating Lee Walker and David Gilbert respectively in the quarter-final of the Q School on Sunday.
The event is being held at the World Snooker Academy in Sheffield.
The third event of the Q School will begin on Monday, May 23, 2011 and will feature four more tour card winners. Li Yan and David Morris also qualified for the season’s main tour after defeating David Gray and Michael Wild in the quarter-finals.
Simon Bedford 4-3 Lee Walker
The scrappy encounter between Bedford and Walker ended in a decider frame with the Englishman Bedford emerging as the winner.
Bedford grabbed a two-frame initial lead at 2-0 after he stumbled upon the table and swept the table in the first two frames firing a half-century break of 53 in the second. The Welshman Walker sprang back and made a huge impact on his opponent to pull level
at 2-2 after grabbing back-to-back frames with 4-74 and 1-66.
A tussling fifth frame finished in Bedford’s favour followed by a 49-63 frame victory for Walker to push the match into a decider frame in which a convincing score line of 63-24 brought the Englishman into the front line of the main tour qualifiers. The
overall frame scores on the score board were 78-9, 67 (53)-32, 4-74 (61), 1-66, 70-52, 49-63 and 63-24.
Tian Pengfei 4-2 David Gilbert
One of the Chinese qualified for the pro tour was Tian Pengfei who edged past the English potter, David Gilbert by the score line of 4-2.
The match-up was a seesaw affair as both cueists fought until the end for triumph.
Gilbert reached the quarter-final stage in the first event of the Q School but could not qualify as Robin Hull defeated him. The Englishman faced the same music this event when Tian cruised past him with a comprehensive score line of 4-2.
Two clearances of 59 and 81 in the first and fifth frames brought Gilbert two frames up against Tian’s four-frame run with knocks of 72 and 66.
The overall score line of the match was 28-78 (59), 73 (72)-0, 70-27, 80-10, 0-96 (81) and 78 (66)-31.
