Simon Burnett clinches Men’s 100m freestyle gold: Day five – British Gas Swimming Championships
Simon Burnett of Windsor clinched the title of Men’s 100m freestyle final on day five of the ongoing 2012 British Gas Swimming Championships at the London Aquatics Centre on Wednesday, March 7.
The British Gas Championship is an eight-day swimming event that will complete Great Britain’s swimming team for the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games.
The 28-year-old Burnett went on a rampage in the double lap freestyle event and stunned the aquatic crowd by capturing gold medal of the 100m discipline. He followed the lead of his strongest competitors, Adam Brown, Craig Gibbons and James Disney-May in
the first lap but with his stupendous efforts in the final lap, Burnett earned his way to the top of victory stand for gold medal.
Hatfield’s Brown appeared as the top contender for gold medal in the first lap, where he completed his initial half of the swim in a fastest time of 23.24 seconds. He was followed by Gibbons of Maxwell, who completed his first half of the race in a second
best time of 23.52 seconds.
Similarly, Millfield’s Disney-May remained 0.14 seconds slower from his former finisher and ended the equivalent distance with the timing of 23.66 seconds. He was trailed by Burnett, who concluded his initial 50 metres of the swim in a fourth fastest time
of 23.70 seconds.
Subsequently, Burnett upset his competitors in the second lap, where he geared up his efforts and sprinted towards the finishing wall in a fastest time of 49.33 seconds for gold medal. His gold winning effort remained 0.15 seconds ahead of Disney-May, who
earned silver medal of the race by producing an effort of 49.48 seconds.
The second position holder was just 0.01 seconds ahead of Gibbons, who settled on the medal rostrum for bronze medal by submitting a time of 49.49 seconds. Consequently, Brown failed to sustain his pace in the second half and finished fourth in the event
by hitting the wall with an effort of 49.51 seconds.
In addition, the winners received accolades for their praiseworthy efforts in the 100m discipline at the prize distribution ceremony of the championship.
