Simon Burnett secures Men’s 100m freestyle title - 2011 British Gas ASA National Championships
Simon Burnett of Windsor triumphed in the final of Men’s 1000m freestyle category, on the final day of the 2011 British Gas ASA National Championships, held in Sheffield.
The ASA nationals is aimed to fill vacant seats in the British swimming team, which is going to compete at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, this July. The national meet is also the second World Selection Trials, which provides a chance to those talented swimmers, who failed to dominate their events at the prior selection trials, conducted in March, 2011.
Burnett won the gold medal of the 100m event in the open class category, by clocking a time of 49.09 seconds. The 28-year-old Burnett was 0.23 seconds away from his following swimmer, Grant Turner of Loughborough University, who appeared on the finishing wall for the silver medal in a time of 49.32 seconds. Glasgow’s Robert Renwick was 0.12 seconds slower than Turner and secured the bronze medal in a time of 49.53 seconds.
The gold medallist has already represented Britain at the international stages of the European Long Course Championships and Commonwealth Games. He clinched a silver medal in the 200m freestyle relay and the 100m medley relay at the 2006 European Championships. In the same year, he won the 100m freestyle title at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. In addition, he won two silver medals and one bronze medal in the events of the 100m freestyle relay, 100m freestyle and 100m medley relay.
James Disney-May of Millfield followed them on the finishing wall, as the fourth fastest sprinter with a timing of 49.79 seconds. He was followed by Richard Schafers of Edinburgh University and Robert Bale of Gallica, who completed their swims in a time of 50.78 and 50.87 seconds for the fifth and sixth positions, respectively.
Jak Scott and Andrew Bushell concluded their swims in the seventh and eighth fastest spot, with timings of 51.01 and 51.17 seconds.
The arena enjoyed the amazing swims of their national swimmers, while British Swimming will announce the names of the selected athletes after the championships conclude.
