Simon Crisford reveals reason for Dawn Approach’s loss – Horseracing News
Simon Crisford, racing manager at Godolphin, believes that Dawn Approach lost the Saturday’s Investec Derby right after the traps were opened, as he had suffered some problem at that point.
No one could have imagined such a huge upset in the race, as Dawn Approach was priced 5 to 4 for the event. The punters had risked the maximum number of bets in his favour, as the conditions suited him more than anyone else.
However, all the hopes were shattered, as soon as the race began. The favourite stallion seemed to have lost control and he did not settle in the midfield, which his jockey Kevin Manning wanted him to do. He simply failed to find
any rhythm and ended up at the bottom of the table, which was such a shame for a runner of his calibre.
Although people were shocked to see the result at Epsom, few of the experts have claimed that the three-year-old colt was facing some issue, which cost him a chance of winning the £782,314.45 race.
According to Godolphin’s racing manager, “I think something happened when he came out of the gates which set him alight. I've seen a picture of Kevin Manning sitting very awkwardly as he jumped out as if he banged his iron or something.
But once he got set alight that was it, the race was over.”
On the other hand, Dawn Approach’s team was also dejected at the outcome of the all important race, which they had been waiting for over the past many months. Manning failed to understand the reason behind the loss and said that
he was not sure what is going to happen in the future.
The veteran rider added, “I don't know what happened yesterday, I just can't throw any light on it. I had planned to settle him mid-division and get him into a rhythm, but we left the gates and he just got out of control. It is
extremely uncharacteristic of him as he is a very laid back horse.”
Prior to the Investec Derby, Dawn Approach had participated in a total of seven events, winning all of them. However, his streak has been broken now and it will be interesting to see what his team decides about his future.
