Simon Dyson and Marcel Siem maintain lead at the rain-hit KLM Open on European Tour
Englishman, Simon Dyson, was hardly deterred by unfavourable conditions on the first day of KLM Open at the Hilversumsche Golf Club in Netherlands, as he performed well to maintain his early lead. The first round was delayed twice through the day when the
start up was put on hold due to overnight vandalism on the course, and the staff found four greens badly damaged by miscreants in the night.
The first round started with a delay of 45 minutes and was further suspended due to bad weather and course flooding. Dyson, who grabbed an early lead in his opening nine, closed his round with a five-under, 65, tied for the lead alongside German golfer,
Marcel Siem.
Dyson, who has won the event twice in his career said, “That's probably the wettest course I've ever played.”
Starting off with an eagle on the back nine, he pulled in four birdies and dropped just one shot before making the turn. His front nine came out to be a bit disappointing where he carded just one birdie and stumbled on a bogey to finish for a joint lead
with Siem. Dyson is currently poised at tenth on the Race to Dubai and is eager to improve his ratings before the championship at the end of the year.
The Englishman added, “My best finish is eighth and I would love to beat that.”
Siem, on the other hand, carded just one bogey on the back nine and also pulled in a brilliant eagle at par-five, 12th. Coming through a disappointing year so far, where he has not posted a single top-ten finish, Siem has done well to stay in
contention on the first day.
Siem, who had three holes remaining when the course flooded, said, “My putter was really, really going well the first 15 holes, and 16, 17, 18, didn't feel that good anymore. I’m really happy that I made another birdie after the break.”
Defending champion, Martin Kaymer, the current World Number Three, fell for a sloppy round on the first day, finishing four-over, 74, while number two and four, Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy did not have a chance to complete their first 18 holes.
