Simon Dyson commits to defend the KLM Open title, despite having a wrist injury
Despite suffering from a wrist injury, Simon Dyson has committed to defend his title at the KLM Open, in a bid to win the event for the fourth time in his career.
After turning pro in 1999, the 34-year-old recorded a total of six European Tour victories and half of them came at the KLM Open. He won the event in 2006, 2009 and 2011.
Right from the start of the 2012 golf season, Dyson faced several injury issues. After posting a 76 in the opening round of the Players Championship in May, he announced his withdrawal from the tournament, following a stress fracture in his pelvis.
As a result, he had to take six weeks off, in order to let the injury heal completely. After making a return to the game, he gained some rhythm before slipping the tendon in his wrist a few weeks ago.
Therefore, he did not get enough time, to have a proper treatment, prior to the start of the €1.8million event, at the Hilversumsche Golf Club.
“I have a slipped tendon in my wrist which has to heal, but this is a tournament I would not have missed,” he said. “I'm going to play through the pain barrier like I did last week and then I have three weeks off to rest it”.
"It's when I put the club down to address the ball I feel it slip and then when I take it away it slips back,” he explained. “Sometimes it is okay and I don't feel it but sometimes it is really painful, especially on drives. Last week I tried to forget about
it and played quite nicely. It is getting better and doesn't hurt as much as two weeks ago”.
He also confirmed that he had an MRI scan on Monday, which revealed a huge amount of swelling around his wrist. Therefore, he will have to ice it on continuous basis, in order to pace up the healing process.
Last week, he participated in the Omega European Masters and tied for the 27th position. This week, he plans to put his maximum efforts, to take the seventh European Tour title of his career home.
