Simon Dyson posts yet another win at the KLM Open edging past David Lynn and Rory McIlroy
Englishman Simon Dyson came back to win the KLM Open for the third time in his career, when he took the better off the rest of the field on Sunday, September 11, to win the 92nd edition of the event at Hilversumsche Golf Club, Netherlands.
Winner of the KLM Open in 2006 and 2009 at Kennemer, Dyson pulled in an impressive four-under, 66 on the final day to win the title one shot clear of the countryman David Lynn.
Dyson’s love affair with the Dutch courses has now catapulted him to number 28 on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) with a winner’s prize share of € 300,000.
"I'm absolutely delighted to be on the same trophy as names like those two," he said. "It's something special, a dream come true really. To win any title once is tough, but to win it three times is a fantastic feeling."
Dyson has now bagged two titles on the European Tour for the season and has now moved to the Top 10 of the Race to Dubai. He was previously ranked 54th on the OWGR and the current boost will go a long way to help him in the closing event of the
year, The Dubai Golf Championship.
The final round remained evenly poised until the first nine holes, as the Scottish veteran Gary Orr pulled in some impressive iron shots in an attempt to bag the title. Orr has not won a single event in 11 long years and came close to putting an end to the
drought until Dyson barged into a birdie spree after his bogey on the 11th.
"I started a bit shakily - my timing was just a little bit off - but after my bogey on 11 I played pretty flawless golf," he added.
Lynn finished for an outright second, closely followed by the in-form Irish boy Rory McIlroy, who posted another strong finish in consecutive weeks. McIlroy has now regained his third place on the OWGR as the defending champion Martin Kaymer failed to make
the cut with three-over, 143.
This was Dyson’s seventh Top 10 finish in the current season and the 33-year-old is all set to make his move for the Top 10 in the OWGR. He is also the winner of the Irish Open played in July this year, where he defeated Australian Richard Green by one stroke.
Dyson and Green go a long way in the history as the duo had challenged each other for the top slot on no fewer than three occasions, with Dyson going all the way to the victory stand.
Dyson also has four Asian Tour wins under his belt and has now turned into a force to reckon with on the tour.
