Simon Gerrans motivated for third Jayco Herald Sun Tour title
Simon Gerrans is lining up to mark his third appearance at the Jayco Herald Sun Tour after he succeeded during the 2005 and the 2006 versions of the race.
The four-day race kicks-off on January 3rd, 2013 right after the Mitchelton Bay Cycling Classic and will skip the criterium series in order to ensure his peak form ahead of the Jayco Herald Sun Tour.
The Australian will lead Team Orica-GreenEdge at the event and is optimistic to grab his third overall victory at the race.
"That would be an ideal way to start the 2013 season, the Jayco Herald Sun Tour is a race I hold pretty close to my heart. It's a race I grew up watching and I won it in my last two attempts,” he told Cyclingnews.
"I'm pretty motivated to go back there next year and start my season well and get another win".
"I think it suits me quite well, especially now that I'll have the Jayco Herald Sun Tour in my legs a week before it. It should put me in really good condition before the national championships and Tour Down Under," he concluded.
The 32-year-old had an outstanding 2012 season with several top performances in his bag including an overall victory at the UCI Inaugural event, Santos Tour Down Under.
He also claimed the top spot at the National Road Race Championships along with a first place finish at the Milan-San Remo, Grand Prix Cycliste de Quebec and a second place finish at the Clasica de San Sebastian 2012.
The Australian Professional bicycle race is held annually in Melbourne with its first edition back in 1952.
Keith Rowley wins the first edition of the race with Nathan Haas succeeding at the most recent version of the event.
Barry Waddell holds the honour of winning the race for a maximum number of five consecutive times through 1964-1968.
Simon is also concerned towards defending his overall title at the National Road Race Championships before moving towards some of the serious goals of the season.
It will be interesting to see, if the Australian manages to secure his third victory at the Jayco Herald Sun Tour to start his 2013 campaign.
