Simon Gerrans wins the Milan-San Remo 2012
Simon Gerrans helped the World Tour debutant side, Team GreenEdge with yet another victory at the fourth World Tour race of the year.
Gerrans claimed the top spot during the 2012 version of the Milan- San Remo and overcame Vincenzo Nibali and Fabian Cancellara to grab the top spot.
The trio attacked the final climb but Australian took full use of his sprinting legs at the Italian event.
He finished the 298 kilometre chase to Sanremo in a fastest time of 6 hours 59 minutes and 24 seconds after a photo finish. Fabian Cancellara and Vincenzo Nibali secured the second and the third positions.
Simon was over the moon after the victory, "I still haven't realized what we actually did today. This is an amazing feeling to win this monument. The team rode perfectly, and we played our cards just the right way", he noted.
It was Gerrans who helped the side with its first victory of the 2012 season. He opened the team’s winning account at the UCI inaugural event Santos Tour Down Under.
The 31-year-old joined the Australian side in 2012 after spending a period of two years with Team Sky.
He finished first overall at the Danmark Rundt and grabbed the third overall spot at the Amstel Gold race in the past season.
Matt White was impressed by the performance of his young guns and noted that the team worked as a unit which was the main reason behind its success.
"We rode as a team all day. The guys were always looking after one another and making sure that Gossy was in the right position at the key moments” He briefed.
Matt further added, “Simon had free reign to cover any big moves, and he certainly did. Boys rode super today. I'm very, very proud".
Peter Sagan of Team Liquigas-Cannondale finished two seconds behind and secured the fourth position.
John Degenkolb, Filippo Pozzato and Oscar Freire Gomez occupied the fifth, the sixth and the seventh position in the respective order.
Volta a Catalunya is the next big race of the season. It is scheduled from March 19-25and the cyclists are now eyeing the fifth Grand Tour race of the season to be held in Spain.
