Would a supposed original Simon & Halbig Doll Head - it has teeth, felt tongue, earrings, blue glass eyes, feathered brows - only have the number 5 as a headmarking? Or is this a reproduction?

  1. in order to answer your question, I have to ask you how do you know its a Simon Halbig since the 5 refers to the mold size. There must be other marks, besides the place for earrings.

Several other things are important in deciding if the head is old,

Eyes are they set to rock, color of the setting

    Is it a shoulder head

Who you got the head from

If its painted just like the old German style of painting

    The touch of the porcelain

    The complete mark

    Somethings you can do :

Take the head to a local doll show only ask antique dealers look in the back of "Doll Reader" for show locations

Look at the marks and closed up of heads on ebay and RubyLane.com

There is a wonderful book  "Simon Halbig Dolls The art of Aspect" by Jan Foulk

Another Book thats hard to find is "German Doll Marks & Identification Book" By Jurgen and Marianne Cieslik

This book will show you that the factory also made heads for other factories as well such as K*R
