Simon Hawkes wins 2012 Sutton Bingham Sailing Club Phantom Open – Sailing News
After putting an excellent sailing show at the Sutton Bingham Sailing Club, Simon Hawkes was able to clinch the title of 2012 Sutton Bingham Sailing Club Phantom Open. Hawkes had a tremendous sail on the Sutton club waters and earned two points after securing
two bullets in the three-race event and hit the winning podium spot.
The weather conditions on the opening day of the event were fluctuating which was trouble for the participants but still they completed the scheduled three races on time without any hurdle. The previous events were hampered by light and lack of winds, but
this time a moderate 10 knot breeze greeted the sailors to have complete races.
The first race began under light wind conditions which were growing with the passage of time over the race course. A fairly short course line was set by the Race officer, Dave Thomson along with his team, which caused a few shouts when the teams started
the first race under shifting breeze. The fleet included eight local clubs and five visitors.
The first race was a bit shaky because of the fluctuating wind conditions and the strong competitive environment on the racing area. The race started at the bottom end of the lake. Simon Hawkes on his boat Wimbleball along with Ian Jay, a local sailor, grabbed
early lead in the game setting a fair course from the beginning. Meanwhile, Tim Hemlsey (Frensham) and Nick Orman (Castle Cove) followed them through the end.
However, in the second race, the lead changed a couple of times as the sailors were having a battle to hit the top podium place. The winds also shifted a bit before the race began. In the end, Nick Orman was finally in the leading position and was at the
brink to claim the second race win but he stuck his boat in the last beat due to a growing breeze to let Ian Jay secure the honours followed by Hawkes, Hemsley and Orman.
Overall results:
1st - Simon Hawkes = 2 points
2nd- Ian Jay = 3 points
3rd - Tim Hemsley = 6 points
