Simon Khan secures his spot at the US Open Championship – Golf news
Simon Khan is moving in the right direction, in a bid to secure his berth at the US Open Championship, as he won the 36-hole qualifier on Monday, May 27, 2013.
Last week, he lost to Matteo Manassero in the sudden-death playoffs of the BMW PGA Championship and was really disappointed on his performance in the last moments of the event.
Yet, he managed to put all his disappointment behind him and bounced back strongly with a 67 on the Old Course and a round of 70 on the New Course, to finish one stroke ahead of Englishman Paul Casey and South African Jaco Van
Zyl.
This allowed him to grab one of the 12 US Open spots on offer and he is now relishing the opportunity to get his place in the second major golf championship of the season. This will be Khan’s third appearance in the event, having
played in the 2009 and 2010 edition of the prestigious event.
“I’m delighted with today,” said Khan. “It was tough out there with a lot of cross winds.”
“Yesterday I did everything I could. I would not have done anything different but it didn’t work out,” he continued. “When I won the BMW PGA Championship there was a downside in that I shut off a little bit after reaching one of
my all-time goals of winning a tournament like that.”
“Hopefully, this time I can look at it the other way round and kick on from here. I don’t know a lot about Merion but it looks fantastic from the pictures I’ve seen,” he added.
Khan started well in the second round by draining birdie putts on each of the first two holes that he played. He then bogeyed the fifth, but atoned for that blemish by adding another shot to his scorecard on the eighth hole.
The back nine of the course also witnessed him playing great shots, as he recorded back-to-back birdies on the 12th, 13th and the 14th hole, while conceding just one bogey that came on the 16th hole.
At the end of the day, he found himself comfortably making it to the top of the leaderboard.
