Simon Santoso and Stefan Wojcikiewicz are through to the second round of Swiss Open GP Gold 2011
Indonesia’s Simon Santoso and Canada’s Stefan Wojcikiewicz are through to the second round after securing victories in the opening round of the Swiss Open GP Gold 2011, being held at Basel, Switzerland on Wednesday, on 16th March.
The number two seed Santoso took only 23 minutes to crush Kristian Midtgaard of Denmark in a straight-set match, whereas Stefan consumed 26 minutes to chuck out Lukas Nussbaumer of Switzerland, again in straight games. Both winners will be fighting against
each other in the second-round match of the event.
Right from the starting points of the opening set, Santoso proved his supremacy as he was in superb control of the rallies. He was dictating the pace of the game and established a comfortable gap of 11-4 in the first half of the opening set.
After the interval, Midtgaard increased his speed to handle the pace of the game but failed as the opponent was perfect in his stroke selection. The Indonesian won the first set by a wonderful difference of 21-9, in just 10 minutes.
In the second game, the Danish worked well in the beginning and reached at 3-3, where the Indonesian again accelerated the pace of the game and stretched a good lead of 11-5 till the first half of the second set.
Simon sent a clear message that he wasn't hanging around by winning the second game in an impressive fashion with a huge margin of 21-13, in just 13 minutes. The concluding score of this 23-minute straight-set match was 21-9 and 21-13.
In another men’s singles match, Stefan of Canada thrashed the local shuttler, Lucas. The Canadian remained in the lead throughout the entire set and spared no chance for the opponent to fight back in the game. He bagged the opening set with a 21-11 margin,
by consuming just 12 minutes.
In the second set, the Swiss tried to match the speed of the Canadian but lost his control over the rallies. At the one-minute interval, Stefan was leading the game with a handsome lead of 11-7.
He remained on track by playing a positive game without any pressure, which resultantly put him ahead of the opponent in every department of the game. The Canadian won the second set in 14 minutes with a 21-14 score on the board. The ending score of this
26-minute-battle was 21-11 and 21-14.
