Simon Santoso stamps Parinyawat Thongnuam en route to quarter-finals of New Zealand Badminton Open
Men’s Singles campaigner Simon Santoso of Indonesia stretched his impressive run in SKYCITY New Zealand Badminton Open and ensured his presence in the quarter-finals on April 12, 2013.
He locked horns with a lower ranked shuttler Parinyawat Thongnuam and their meeting prolonged to 67 minutes in local badminton complex of Auckland.
The victorious shuttler took some time to read his rival’s game but he managed to finish this tussle with a favourable result of 20-22, 21-17 and 21-17.
On the other hand, the Thai campaigner could not show consistency in his performance and squandered his first set win.
In the opening game, Parinyawat started with couple of productive rallies and established a decent lead in no time.
He pocketed many points without any interruption and doubled his total way before the one-minute break.
Though, the Indonesian shuttler also prevailed in few consecutive rallies but his supremacy was short lived.
Parinyawat injected more space in his attack and finished first half of the set with a respectable score position.
Latter part of the game kept swinging between them all the way to game point situation but then Parinyawat managed to register a tight yet decisive figure of 22-20.
The story was entirely different in second set of match as the opposing shuttler stormed back with a strong reply and brought the contest to right balance.
Simon, who holds top spot in the tournament ranking, proved himself superior in all areas of game and avoided a straight-set defeat.
At first, he mounted pressure by ruling the court in establishing rallies and then magnified the impact with a mountainous figure of 11 at half time.
After the mid-game break, Simon did not lose his grip and clinched this crucial match point with an overwhelming margin of 21-17.
The Indonesian shuttler played impeccable badminton also in the decider and locked the honour in a commendable manner.
He maintained an upper hand from very first stroke till the last one and secured a quarter-final berth in this Grand Prix tournament.
Simon registered a concluding figure of 21-17 and setup his next clash with Lee Dong Keun of Korea.
