Simon Thornton leads the Madeira Islands Open after Round 2
Irish golfer, Simon Thornton is leading the Madeira Open after posting a six under par in the second round. The player displayed amazing skill at the Porto Santo Golfe in Madeira Portugal as he moved up nine places after the second round. Making one eagle,
five birdies and one bogey, Thornton is leading the tournament by one stroke at seven under par overall.
At second place is French Francois Delamontagne, who posted a two under par in the second round. In third place are Englishmen Jamie Elson and Chris Gane. Gane, who was leading after the first round, dropped down two places after posting an even par in the
second round.
Thornton really surprised everyone as he wasn’t in a very good position after his opening round of one under par. Making three birdies and two bogeys yesterday, the player really improved his game in the second round.
Thornton started off really well, making a birdie on the first hole and that’s when he really picked up the pace. A blazing eagle came on the third hole that truly lifted up the Irishman’s spirit. Making his only bogey of the day on hole number five, the
player made the turn at two under par. The back nine was very decent as well as the player started with a birdie again. Making back to back birdies on hole number fourteen and fifteen, Thornton set the golf course on fire. Birdying his eighteenth hole, the
player finished at six under par for the day and atop the leader board.
Prior to the tournament, Thornton was really excited about the Madeira Islands Open, especially after struggling in the Iberdrola Open.
“I think I’ll be more dwelling on the fact that I am playing well and have a great chance over the weekend having missed the last two cuts,” said Thornton. “I just have to go out there and give it 100 per cent and see what happens. There are scores to be
made out there but if you hit a couple of loose ones then you can make a big number so hopefully I can keep it going and keep the mistakes off the card.”
