Simon Wakefield finishes on a high note at the Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Challenge
Simon Wakefield of England fired a three-under par 68 in the final round of the Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Challenge hosted by Royal Golf Club, to finish second on the leaderboard, on Sunday, October 21, 2012.
Wakefield started off with a par putt on the first hole and followed that with a birdie on the second. He then added another shot on the seventh hole and reached the turn with a two-under par score.
A couple of birdies on the 10th and the 13th hole took him to a four-under par score for the round.
However, his tee shot on the 16th hole found a water hazard present at the end of the fairway. As a result, he had to suffer a bogey.
At the end of the round, he settled for an 11-under par tournament score, three strokes behind the winner Kristoffer Broberg.
Despite failing to reach the top of the leaderboard, he was pleased with his overall performance in the tournament. He was the only player in the field who at least challenged Broberg for the top position.
Otherwise, all the other players had at least a nine-stroke difference against Broberg’s winning score of a 14-under par 270.
Talking to the European Challenge Tour’s official website, he stated that he was happy to consolidate his position among the top-10 players in European Challenge Tour Rankings.
At the end of the season, the top-20 players in the rankings will receive automatic exemptions to play the European Tour events next year.
“I’m delighted,” he said. “I knew it was going to be difficult to catch Kristoffer given his record this season. It was always going to be a tough day and I’m glad I was able to keep my position”.
He added, “I made one mistake by hitting it in the water on the 16th, but apart from that I played very nicely”.
He also praised the overall arrangements made by the Royal Golf Club, especially after receiving a short notice to host the event in just three weeks.
“Overall the tournament has been an absolute credit to Royal Golf Club,” he said. “The course has been a dream to play, and everyone has gone above and beyond to get everything sorted in a very short time”.
