Simon Wakefield remains in contention at the ALLIANZ Golf Open Toulouse Metropole
Simon Wakefield of England signed his scorecard with a 68 on Friday, for a tied second place at the ALLIANZ Golf Open Toulouse Metropole, midway through the second round at Golf de Toulouse-Seilh.
Since turning professional in 1997, Wakefield has won only one event on the European Challenge Tour – he won the Tessali Open del Sud in 2002.
This week, he is confident to double his stats on the tour, by contending strongly in the remaining two rounds over the weekend.
The Englishman is currently moving on the right track, as he recorded a sparkling six-under par 65 in the opening round, followed by a 68 in the second round.
He now settles only one stroke behind the leader Matteo Delpodio, who carded a 67 in the second round for a 10-under par halfway score.
Wakefield got off to a slow start in the second round, as he recorded a single birdie against a lone bogey and remained on equal-par score on the turn.
He then picked up some pace, entering the back nine of the course, as he signed three red circles on his scorecard without conceding a single bogey.
According to him, he used the defensive approach, because of the strong winds blowing on the course.
He stated that it was difficult to attack the pins because of the windy conditions. Therefore, he tried to make pars on most of the holes and availed the opportunities whenever he had the birdie chances.
As a result, he found himself in a good position, heading into the weekend for the last two rounds.
“It was tough out there, but I enjoy playing in the wind when the course is set up for it, which it was today,” he said. “It was a good challenge, and for the most part I rose to it”.
“The objective was to play smart golf, because it wasn’t a day for attacking the pins. You have to think a bit more on a day like today – I knew people weren’t going to pull away, so it was a day to dig in and put myself into a good position going into the
weekend. I’m feeling good and very much looking forward to it,” he explained.
