Simon Whitlock faces Ross Smith at the European Darts Open, who will stand tall this time?
The European Darts Open begins July 6 and all eyes are on one man, Simon Whitlock.
“The Wizard”, as he is known, remains the only player in the world of darts who has never won any major tournament after reaching the finals.
This ‘missing link’ has been pinching the Australian darts magician for a very long time. He has been brilliant but has always failed in the finals.
This year, Whitlock is up against Ross Smith and there have speculations that this will ignite a new rivalry between Whitlock and Smith, as both the dart throwers have been trying very hard to grasp a major win.
Whitlock’s career has seen him doing miracles.
It was the 2012 McCoy’s Premier League where “The Wizard” flushed Adrian Lewis out of the Premier League in a battle that was fair and square. It was the biggest upset in the Premier League history because Whitlock was an under-dog in the tournament.
The final of the Premier League saw a Taylor versus Whitlock face-off. It was the most uncertain bet that has ever come across the darts table, as both Whitlock and Lewis had taken out an all-star roster.
Whitlock could have written darts history that night but he lost and “The Power” of darts made it clear that he is the best in the business.
“The Wizard” remains ‘title-less’.
The Players Championship and the UK Open were follow ups for Whitlock’s failures. He flunked in both the tournaments and remained in the loser’s list.
The European Darts Open is the venue where Simon can change all of that.
His opponent in the debut battle of the tournament is Smith who has been consistent but lacks the charisma and the passion to surprise. It would be an easy start for the Australian if he remains focused.
Whitlock remains the top bet to win his face-off against Smith.
Will it be the tournament where “The Wizard” changes the way his record speaks? Only time will answer this question.
For now, he requires a skill-set that is close to perfection. If he takes things easy, he might face an early exit. If he remains focused, he will definitely go home with the trophy.
