Simona Baumrtova wins Women’s 100m backstroke heats - FINA Swimming Championships (25m)
Simona Baumrtova of Czech Republic won the preliminary rounds of the Women’s 100m backstroke on first day of the 2012 FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) at Sinan Erdem Dome in Istanbul, Turkey, on Wednesday, December 12.
Baumrtova stifled hopes of her opponents in the four-lap discipline as she qualified into the semi-final as fastest swimmer.
She faced tough challenge from her closest competitor, Daryna Zevina, but with her commendable pace, Baumrtova managed to outperform her over the finishing blockade for first position.
She stayed only an inch ahead of her following swimmer as she surfaced on the finishing end for first position by producing an effort of 57.65 seconds.
She was traced by Zevina, who stayed only 0.01 seconds slower and followed her into the next round as second best swimmer by clocking a time of 57.66 seconds.
Third fastest spot of the race was obtained by Olivia Smoliga of USA, who stayed 0.09 seconds apart and finished third in the event by producing a time of 57.75 seconds.
Fourth fastest spot of the event was obtained by Mie Oestergaard Nielsen of Denmark, who was 0.08 seconds behind and settled on the finishing end with the timing of 57.83 seconds.
Nielsen was chased by Grace Loh of Australia, who was 0.06 seconds apart and concluded her race in fifth place by posting a time of 57.89 seconds.
Sixth position of the race was obtained by Georgia Davies of Great Britain, who was 0.05 seconds behind and touched the wall with the timing of 57.94 seconds.
Similarly, Davies remained 0.08 seconds faster from Arianna Barbieri of Italy, who managed to occupy seventh best spot of the event by making her way to the wall with an effort of 58.02 seconds.
Eighth fastest spot of the event was obtained by Kira Toussaint of Netherlands, who was 0.21 seconds behind and ended her race in a time of 58.23 seconds.
Furthermore, Baumrtova was contented with her fastest qualification effort and said that she would try hard to continue the same in the semi-final, so she could sustain her fastest qualification spot in the playoff.
