Simona Halep downs Sharon Fichman in the qualifying 2nd round – Rogers Cup 2011
August the 7th, 2011 saw the start of the qualifying second round of the Rogers Cup 2011. The Romaine, Simona Halep competed against the home-girl Sharon Fichman. The world number 55 (Halep) won the match in straight
sets 6-3, 6-1 at the Rexall Centre, York University in Toronto, Canada.
The 19 year old Halep won the pitch and with confidence served an ace, however, with lack of precession struck 2 net balls and one line fault. On the contrary, Fichman struck one double fault and zero aces.
The Canuck had no consistency in her serve and return serve and barely managed to win 45% in her serve and 40% in her return serve.
Romaine had an exceptional first serve percentage opening the set which was 70%, but her over all service points were 60%, she was able to return almost more than half of her opponent’s shots and achieved a mediocre 55% of her total return points.
Moreover, her defence was as strong as an ox and did not falter enabling her to save 75% of her break points along with breaking her opponent thrice. On the other hand, the 20-year-old Canadian lost her points also because she
was only capable of saving three break points and broke her opponent once.
Halep was able to win the set because of her consistency and skill, which facilitated her in achieving 57% of her total set points, which were 9 points more than Fichman’s.
After befalling and being restricted to only 3 game points in the first set, Fichman had not learnt her lesson and even though, she perfected her accuracy, it was too late in the match and she eventually lost the second set as
well. She was able to bag a pathetic 30% of her total serve points along with an appalling return she clenched 39% of her total return points.
Additionally, her defence had deteriorated and was only able to save 25% of her break points along with, barely attaining a 20% her break points won. While, the Romaine had a sturdy defence and gave only one break point opportunity
along with, winning 75% of break points.
Mean while, Halep had an exceptional serve and pulverized her opponent’s shots, she was able to win almost double the points of her adversary, attaining 61% of her total serve points along with an exceptional return which enabled
her to bag a 67% of her total return points.
Summing it up; in the second set Fichman failed miserable and was restricted to only one game point and was unable to win the set. Halep on the other hand, had won the match with 12 points more than the Canuck’s.
