Simone Bolelli overpowers Blaz Kavcic in the title round – Aberto de Florianopolis 2012 CH
Rated at number 110 in the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Rankings, Simone Bolelli registered a thumping victory against the 106th ranked Slovakian competitor, Blaz Kavcic, in the final of Aberto de
Florianopolis on Sunday. The 26-year-old Italian overwhelmed his superior-ranked opponent in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, to lift up the ATP Challenger Tour trophy.
It was a fairly one-sided affair being played on the hard courts of Florianopolis, Brazil, with the stunning Bolelli coming out as the deserving winner in the end. The Italian asserted his control over the game early and kept dominating
rest of the way to register a comprehensive victory. It was his seventh ATP Challenger championship title and a much needed one to take off his current professional season.
Bolelli was seeded at number eight in the tournament draw and displayed his sublime form to outplay every single competitor he faced en route to the title victory. He didn’t drop a single set in all the five matches he played in
Florianopolis, winning all his encountered in straight sets to stamp his authority over the rivals. He surprised the third seed Rogerio Dutra da Silva in the quarter-finals and carried on with his winning momentum in the semis by throwing out the fifth seed
Argentine, Diego Junqueira, to earn a title shot.
The final showdown of the tournament was no different from the other matches being played by the crafty Italian. He delivered 59 per cent of his first serve on target and won 23 out of 33 points in the process. Bolelli’s victory
was further assisted by the error-ridden game play of his opponent, who kept spilling mistakes all the way to remain at a disadvantage.
The opening set of the match started off in a conventional fashion, with both contestants holding their serves in the opening four games to take the scores to 2-2. A trade of serve breaks in the following two games dragged the
score line to 3-3 but Bolelli took a step ahead to strike a vital break point conversion in the eighth game to take a 5-3 lead. He convincingly served out of the opener at 6-3 to get one up in the contest.
Kavcic dropped his serve in the very first game of the following set and again in the fifth game to trail 1-4. He tried to break the shackles by registering his second break point of the match in the sixth game but couldn’t prevent
the Italian serving out of the match at 6-4 and getting his hands on the championship trophy.
