Simone Ercoli lifts Men’s 5km Open Water title: 2011 European Open Water Swimming Championships
Simone Ercoli of Italy won the title of Men’s 5km Open Water Time Trial event on day three of the 2011 European Open Water Swimming Championships, on September 10, in Eilat, Israel.
The Italian veteran claimed the title of the Men’s 5km discipline by reporting in a wonderful time of 53 minutes and 34.9 seconds. Ercoli was the bronze medallist of the 5km individual discipline and team event at the 2005 Montreal World Championships. He
also occupied the silver medal of the same events at the 2010 European Championship in Budapest.
Nevertheless, the Italian maintained a lead of 4.1 seconds over her following swimmer, Jan Wolfgarten of Great Britain, as he followed Ercoli on the podium for the silver medal by submitting an effort of 53 minutes and 39.0 seconds. The silver medallist
remained in a lead of 24.5 seconds over his subsequent competitor, Michael Dmitriev of Israel, who acquired the bronze medal of the event by clocking a time of 54 minutes and 03.5 seconds. With his bronze finish in the event, Dmitriev won the hearts of Israel’s
crowd, as the nation won their first medal of the championship.
In the meantime, Evgeny Drattsev of Russia claimed fourth fastest spot of the swim, as he remained 9.2 seconds slower than the bronze medallist and posted a time of 54 minutes and 12.7 seconds. The Russian managed a lead of 3.6 seconds over his following
swimmer, Romain Beraud of France by completing his swim in a fifth fastest time of 54 minutes and 16.3 seconds.
Meanwhile, the Men’s 10km Open Water gold medallist of the championship, Thomas Lurz of Germany concluded his swim in the sixth position. Lurz remained 19.0 seconds behind his preceding swimmer and produced a time of 54 minutes and 35.3 seconds. Lurz was
in a lead of 15.2 seconds over his subsequent swimmer, Kirill Abrosimov of Russia, who completed his swim in a seventh fastest time of 55 minutes and 00.5 seconds.
Then, spectators witnessed Gianlorenzo Parmigiani of Italy capture eighth position of the event, as he produced a time of 55 minutes and 13.6 seconds. The Italian was trailed by Csaba Gercsak of Hungary, who secured the ninth finishing spot of the event
by clocking a time of 55 minutes and 24.7 seconds.
Ercoli was delighted with his title claiming effort after overpowering the 10km gold medallist, Lurz, in his main event. Furthermore, medals were awarded to position holders of the Men’s event after the completion of the session.
