Simone Vagnozzi upsets Juan Monaco in straight sets at Barcelona Open
Qualifier Simone Vagnozzi surprised fans at the 2011 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell earlier today, upsetting wild card and sixteenth seed Juan Monaco of Argentina in straight sets at the tournament. The match was over in just a little
under one hour and twenty-five minutes, and the final score-line was 6-3, 6-2 in Vagnozzi’s favour.
It was an unexpected victory for the Italian player, who is ranked World Number 186 and could not gain direct acceptance into the ATP World Tour Series 500 tournament. He was forced to compete in the qualifying rounds of the event
before making it to the main draw.
The match was an easy one for Vagnozzi, despite the fact that he is ranked well outside the ATP Top 100 and Juan Monaco is World Number 37 at the moment. In the first set, both players did not score any aces, but Monaco gave Vagnozzi
a significant advantage by double faulting thrice and being broken two times. The Argentine pro was not able to break his opponent even once in the set. The match went on, and Vagnozzi managed to win a whopping 57 per cent of the total points against his opponent
in this set. He won 6-3, giving himself a significant lead in the match.
The second set was an even swifter victory for the Italian pro, who took the lead despite double faulting once. He managed to break Juan Monaco three times in this set, and was only broken once. The set consisted of four service
and return games apiece, although Monaco was clearly badly discouraged by his first-set defeat. Vagnozzi had the psychological advantage, and he made the most of it despite committing one double fault. He managed to win the second set by taking 57 per cent
of the total points yet again, setting up a winning score-line of 6-3, 6-2 against Monaco.
Simone Vagnozzi will be facing Juan Carlos Ferrero in the third round of the tournament, after the Spanish pro defeated Germany’s lucky loser Mischa Zverev in his second round match.
