Simone Vagnozzi walks over Fabio Fognini in the first round of the Barcelona Open
Simone Vagnozzi of Italy managed to make it into the second round of the 2011 Barcelona Open tournament despite the fact that his compatriot and World Number 49 Fabio Fognini defeated him 6-2 in the first set of their first round
match. However, Fognini retired in the second set when the score was 2-4, and Simone Vagnozzi received an easy pass into the next round of the tournament. The final score-line for this match was 6-2, 2-4 to Fognini.
World Number 186 Simone Vagnozzi received a lucky break in his first round match at the 2011 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, where he was taking part in the clay ATP World Tour 500 Series as a qualifier. The player did not receive
entry into the main draw and was forced to go through qualifying rounds to make it into the tournament. His opening match at the tournament lasted just under one hour and two minutes.
Fognini played great tennis in the first set of the match, scoring three aces and converting three of five break points successfully without committing any double faults. His opponent managed to break him twice, but did not score
any aces and also committed one double fault. Fabio Fognini stayed on top during the match, and took six points more than his opponent to win the first set 6-2 with an impressive 56 per cent of the total points played.
However, as the second set began, it was obvious that the higher-ranked player had sustained an injury in the first set of the match. He seemed to fall apart, and allowed Vagnozzi to get the better of him by breaking him twice
in the first six games alone. Simone Vagnozzi took advantage of his injury and managed to bring the match to 4-2 in his favour, winning 60 per cent of the points played before Fognini called it quits and retired from the match.
Simone Vagnozzi is currenly ranked World Number 186, and will be facing eighteenth seed Juan Monaco of Argentina in the second round of the Barcelona Open.
