Question:

Simple, traditional Japanese meals or snacks?

My boyfriend will be home on leave in a week or so and I'd like to mimick a meal like his grandma would make. Since she's from Japan, he's spoiled on traditional foods and hasn't had any since he went into the military.

Any ideas? :)

He's especially fond of rice, seaweed, and raw salmon. But I'm going to go ahead and cook any fish I get.

  1. Sushi and sashimi is probably a good idea... or maybe you could make onigiri (rice balls). Misoshiru (Miso soup) with wakame(seaweed)?

  2. Sushi and sashimi would go over very well, especially if you dress like a giesha! If you can't do all that, there's sushi plate sets complete with saki decanter and little cups.  also, bento boxes would be great for picnics or just to munch on in front of the tv.  Sushi rice is very easy to make, and raw salmon is ok, but try cold smoked salmon.

    Hope this helps!

  3. My Grandma was also from Japan. I do not know how much you know about Japanese cooking so I may tell you more than what you already know and I will suggest the easiest things to make.  I also do not know what part of the country you are in. Japanese food ingredients may be difficult to find. But I suggest the following menu

    miso soup-

It comes in a package that you can mix with hot water.  You can also make it from scratch. go to this site for the recipe for everything listed in this menu

Tempura salmon with vegetables. use broccoli, onions, sweet potatoes.

The batter comes in pre-mixed boxes. The dipping sauce comes from a bottle called "memmi" read directions for dilution ratio.

    Rice

Make sure you use short gain rice and use a rice cooker for best results.

    Nori

You can buy nori in packages ready to eat. they come in small strips about two inches wide. Look for "seasoned seaweed"

For a nice touch, use real chop sticks, not the throw away kind  and Japanese dishware. Remember to put the rice into the chawans or rice bowls.

  4. Sushi and Wasabi. Yum!

    Udon Noodles and Mitzo soup.

  5. You can prepare him a Bento (Snack Box) with beautiful Sushi (rice wrapped with anything)

Soysauce and wasabi is a compulsory items together of chopsticks.

Enhance youe bento by  wrapping it in a beautifully patterned face towel

  6. Sounds like you've got the makings for sushi.  Get some nori seaweed and then wrap yellow-fin tuna in it for the sashimi and walah! you've got sushi! But to tell you the truth fortune cookies aren't chinese at all, they are of Japanese decent so you should make some of those too. Also you can skewer chicken on wooden sticks in order to make Yakitori.  Go to my source for instructions on how to make that.
