I can't find the answer in my book (where I am supposed to be able to find it), so could somebody help me "simply explain the formation of an ionic compound"? Thanks sooooo much!

  2. A metal like sodium and a nonmetal like chlorine come together. The sodium loses its outermost valance electron to the chlorine, which gains it. Because the sodium has lost an electron (-), it becomes a cation (+). Because the chlorine has gained it, it becomes an anion (-).
