How many volts come out of a common household electrical socket?

I'm working with a light system that has two power settings; 115V, or 230V. Which won't fry the unit?

  1. In the US, you would be using 115 volt setting.

  2. Use the one appropriate for the country you are in. US or Canada, use 115, UK or Europe use 230.

Other countries, check with someone else, most all people know the AC voltage of their country.

You have several answers that tell you to use the 115 setting because that's safer. They are completely wrong. If you do have a 230 volt socket, setting your lamp to 115 and plugging it in will cause damage.

  3. Most households have 220 to 240 volts of power per socket. I'd go with the 115V. Best of luck.

  4. In the US, set it to 115V. In much of the rest of the world, the setting will be 230V. The voltage can be determined by the shape and arrangement of the contacts on the plug or socket.

  5. 115V has less voltage so if you are worried about surges i would just stay with the lower voltage.
