  1. Well the two basic equine colors are black and red. All other colors are one of those two base colors with the addition of different modifiers or dilution genes,

    Black + Dun = Grullo/Grulla

Black + Creme = Smokey Black

    Black + 2 Creme = Perlino

Black Based horse with Agouti (Agouti restricts black to the points) = Bay

Black + Roan = Blue Roan

    Chestnut + Creme = Palomino

    Chestnut + 2 Cremes = Cremello

Chesnut + Roan = Strawbery Roan

You can also have base colors red or black with multiple modifiers for example a Bay Roan Carries Red, Black, Agouti and Roan.  Then you can even get into the spotted horses that carry an additional gene for white so you could have a Bay Roan Tovero - it would have to carry Red, Black, Agouti, Roan, Tobiano and Overo -- plus it might carry one or more not even expressed..

Friesians are probably best known for their black color but that are not always black. Fire Magic is an excellent example of a nice quality Bay Friesian. He is actually Homozygous for Red.

Many breeds have solid black horses; Arabians, QH's, TB's, Paints, Standardbreds, Paso Fino's, Tennessee Walkers, Saddlebreds, Missouri Fox Trotters and Percherons are very well known for their black horses. There are many more as well. Those are just off the top of my head that I've actually saw solid black horses of.

Those are some I could think of off the top of my head.  A lot of horses come in solid black though.  I love all of these breeds! If you are looking for a black horse though it also depends on what kind of ride you want.  Riding a Friesian would be very different then riding a Quarter horse.  I hope this helps!
