  1. Short answer: You cannot get the definite (exact) value of what x and y equal. You could only do this if you had a similar equation, where x and y had the same relationship and in this case you would solve by using the method of simultaneous equations.

    This is as much as you might get from this equation:

    x + y = 33.305 - 31.465

    From this:

    x = 33.305 - 31.465 - y

    x = -y + 1.84

    And

    y = 33.305 - 31.465 - x

    y = -x + 1.84


  2. as you have stated the problem, there is no one solution, there is an infinite set of solutions, the set for which X + Y = 1.840

    you could draw a graph of this solution set as a line that crosses both the X and Y axises, at the points (0,1.840), which is where it crosses the Y axis, and (1.840,0), which is where it crosses the X axis.

    From those two point, connect to make a line segment, and draw the segment outward in both directions. The line has a slope of -1 (as X goes up, Y goes down an equal amount, and vice versa), and any point on this line solve the problem.
