Simple Spanish question?

How do I know if I'm supposed to use the word "La" or "El" in a sentence? I can't tell. Like If I was going to say "The flower is purple" would I say La or El?

  3. you have to determine the gender of the thing your talking about.... if it's femenine, you use "la", if it's masculine you use "el".... 99% of the time if the word ends on the letter "a", it's a femenine, but not always... for example "flor" is femenine, so you would say "La Flor", but it doesn't end in "a".... works most of the time.

  6. It depends. You have to figure out if the sentence is feminine or masculine. La is for feminine and El is for masculine. "The flower is purple" = "La flor es morada." I think it's supposed to depend on the noun of the sentence.  

  7. well, look at the noun ... does it end in a "a" or an "o" ... A is feminine, hence use LA and O is masculine so use EL

    remember to change the ending of the adj also to agree with the noun

    You have to learn the gender of the words. You must memorize which words are masculine and feminine. I would reccomend one of those English to Spanish dictionaries.

    Words ending in A ... are usually feminine, words ending in e or o are usually masculine.  Not Always, Though.

    See?  you really do have to memorize the gender as you learn them. Sorry!  :) ... But, I hope that helped.

  11. How the noun or subject ends. If you want to say the shirt is red you would say LA camisA es rojo. Or the picture is old you would say EL foto es viejo. But sometimes there are exceptions to this rule. But like I said, if it ends with A then most likely it's la and ends with O it's EL. Hope I helped!! :)

    "The" is the only defined article in English. In Spanish there are four, depending on the genre (masculine/fminine) and number (singular/plural) of the word. Watch the following:

    - El: sing-masc ("El perro" > "The dog").

    - La: sing-fem ("La casa" > "The house").

    - Los: plu-masc ("Los niños" > "The children").

    - Las: plu-fem ("Las frutillas" > "The strawberries").

    In Spanish we use "the" (el/la/los/las) before EVERY noun
