I'm a beginner at tennis.

Can you tell me what grip I should use for a basic forehand and backhand. Please also tell me where my legs should be (which is in front, etc.). Hyperlinks to pictures/sites are good.

Thanks! Please only answer if you play Tennis...

  1. In all honesty, just hold the racket how it feels comfortable for you. It's all good saying use the eastern grip, semi eastern, continental etc, but most of it is a load of nonsense to new players and it's just easier to hold and hit how it feels comfortable.

Depending on whether you hit a one handed or two handed backhands, the grips are very different. For a two handed backhand, hold your racket in your right hand (assuming you are right handed) so your thumb and forefinger look like a v against the handle. Then hold the grip with your left hand how you would hold it with your right hand for a forehand.

It's probably best to get a few tennis lessons really. Text and videos and pictures just can't teach you as well as a real person can.

Here are a few videos though, just in case it does help:

  2. Do not use continental grip! I'm pretty sure it's a western grip. The left leg is in front.
