In our daily routine..there should be a day or two or even maybe often..sometimes..occasionally or never..it happens we took the taxi..for any purpose..i normally travel quite often when i'm in a hurry..but there is something that i have noticed though. Take for ex. the meter rate is $8..i'll give the driver $10..saisfied of course..once i happen to travel with the same driver..i make a mistake counting and didn't have too change,..i gave him for ex. $7.85 when rate was $7.95..the same taxi driver ask me the 10 cents..because of many little coins..i made an error of calculation..but my quest is..do we have to give tips or money more to what is charge..they don't mind asking..and is you don't sit in the car and wait for your change..they won't ask you to wait for your change..voice ppl for your point of view in regards to that..i know that we have a job to respect and pay for what we use..but why do they need to take tips when we are already paying for the service ??????

  1. if we tip them maby they can go buy some laundry soap and learn english

  2. No more taxi tipps. Put the coins in the penny bank for da kids..

You may tip the cshark though.

P.s Does the driver get paid hrly?? Or commission?

  3. Yep.  You should tip them.  They often don't make much of what the actual bill is.  It goes to pay for gas, the vehicle, the dispatch service, etc.  So they make their money on tips.

  4. Unfortunately, many workers rely on tips for a big part of their income.  And, because of that, they are paid low wages.  If we were not a tipping economy, in my opinion the wage structures would change.  In some countries, Japan for example, tipping is not done.

A bit of trivia:  Eleanor Roosevelt had cards printed up which she would leave in restaurants that said "Tipping is un-American.  Thank you for your service."

  5. A tip is formally known as a gratuity. Why? Because you're supposed to give it when you're grateful for something. The idea behind tips in the service industry is that if someone goes above and beyond, you can compensate them above and beyond their actual pay. In this day and age, tips have become expected, and it's considered rude to pay less than 10%, even for sub-par service. As someone who worked in that sector for over 4 years, I certainly understand that you come to rely on tips as a portion of your income, but there's bad tipping and then there's not earning a tip. If you're in the taxi, starbucks, bar, etc, and you don't feel you were given anything extra in addition to your standard service, let the person know with your tip (or lack thereof). They certainly didn't earn it, and maybe it will make them realize that their service has been slacking and they should start putting in that extra effort again if they want better tips.

  6. Heavens no.  Never.  Why would you tip the taxi driver when he/she has a running meter that is already designed for you to be overcharged.

  7. I used to take taxis constantly because of my circumstances, and always would tip, sometimes generously or when the driver clearly didn't deserve it (one took 45 minutes to take me on a 20 minute drive when I had a job interview that I was late for because of him because he didn't go the way I told him to and he got lost... I just gave him extra because I didn't have time to wait for change). Most of the time the drivers are down right irritable in my experience (some cursing at the other drivers on the road). I've only gotten change maybe twice because of how uncomfortable they make you feel when you do. Overall I'd say they expect a tip without earning it. And it doesn't seem to me like they really rely on tips that bad, one driver went through Dunkin Donuts' drive through and pulled money out of a wad so thick he couldn't get it out of his pocket. But maybe I'm just jaded against the local cab company (Mc Carthy Flowered Cab). See this area isn't busy enough for you to be able to just flag down a cab, no you have to call and speak with someone who is bitterly angry all the time and has no patience or apparent knowledge of the area and demands to know the exact address of where you are going. If you can just use a bus.

  8. no of course not you do not have to tip anyone if you don't want to but I tip if the service and meal in a restaurant is good and when i go for drinks if the server is nice and fast i tip now with the cab thing many years ago my mom ran a cab company in Calgary and her cabbies were expected to help the elderly or a woman with kid so on and so forth also when i travel and have luggage i expect the caby to help me with my bags if he or she does well yes they get a bigger tip and so i think they should if they were good at their Job because as most things it is a service so i think it would depend on the service i have noticed quite a drop in the service with cabs today good driver gets the tip others will have to learn to be better at there jobs

  9. I drive a cab in Philly, and here's my take on this.

First, I want to get out of this after  20 years.  The enjoyment I use to get being able to do what I want isn' there anymore, especially with  the hated and incompetent parking authoritity taking over and trying to force a GPS system.

to answer you:  I NEVER  ask for tips.  In fact we were supposed to ask for a gas surcharge recently, and myself and friends have to much pride to ask, like begging.

There are some cabdrivers whom have all kind of tricks,  but I know that it is very few, Just like other professions.

I am very grateful for tips and try to give people a reason to tip me better than average.  I do not care about people whom do not tip because they are only about 1%.  Occasionally I do get mad if I did something extra and not really my job (like carry your groceries in for you).

I also use services, and I can be very generous, or just average depending on the service I get.  Really, it is a matter of pride, gratitude,  and wanting to pass it on to someone else, hoping it comes around to me again.  If I couldn't tip, I would not use the service, just out of principle.

Some observations:  The more money you make, the less you tip.

Certain ethnic groups don't tip at all, like the French, and Indian cultures (no offense).

Finally, I know this is none of your business, and why should you care.  It least in Philly, every day a cab driver makes money, another day he or she doesn't.  Tips are the difference.  So thanks to those who do, and to those whom don't , WHO CARES.

  10. i use tips as a way to tell someone what i thought of the job or service that they preformed.  good job=good tip.  bad job= bad or no tip.  i hate when people expect a tip for doing the job and find it a hassle to make change.  i feel that is just a scam to get a tip.  but at the same time dont try to short change someone
