Question:

Simple question about Doryx

I am taking 100mg of Doryx daily to treat acne

The insert says to avoid taking vitamin & mineral supplements 2 hours before or after taking the Doryx

I like to take 200mg vitamin C and 30mg zinc in the mornings

So if I take the Doryx much later in the evening will it have any negative affect on absorption of the antibiotic?

Also, it doesn't mention anything about meals, but... will taking it in the evening when my stomach is more full affect absorption of the Doryx?

Thanks for all answers

  1. Doxycyline interacts with foods and supplements high in calcium and other cations (positively charged ions) & that's why it's advised that you take it on an empty stomach. Calcium & cations impair the absorption of doxycyline so, to be safe, you should probably adjust the time of day that you take your vitamins rather than take the antibiotic later so that you can be sure not to interfere with its absorption. I think that it is more important for you to gain the full benefit from treating your acne than to be able to take your vitamins at the same time every day, it's only a small adjustment to make that would ensure that you are absorbing the proper amount of the drug and avoiding the side effects that occur when it's not taken properly. If doxycyline is taken with calcium it can cause it to be sequestered (deposited) in bones and teeth so just be safe and take it first before you eat/drink or take your vitamins.
