Question:

Simple question about a P45!?

So I finally got a new job, and the thing is, i was "dismissed" from my last one in October for reasons best left unsaid! However, when they sent me the letter of dismissal, they never sent me a P45!

I really need a P45 now for tax purposes (obviously) and would prefer this to a P46 (Emergency Tax = AAARGH!) So i was wondering: if i were to call my old employer and ask for a p45, would they be able to send me one? Bearing in mind that the last time i worked there was the beginning of October 2007.

Thanks in advance! Much love and gratitude to any who answer! xx

  1. The tax year runs from 5TH april to 4th APRIL EACH YEAR. yOUT p45 WOULD ONLY HAVE BEEN VALID UP TO APRIL 2008. AS YOU WERE UNEMPLOYED PRESUMABLY YOU SIGNED ON AT THE UNEMPLYMENT OR DHSS OFFICE, IF YOU DID THEY WILL PROVIDE YOUR EMPLOYER WITH A TAX CODE FOR YOU. BUT YOU REALLY SHOULD ALSO GO DOWN THE p46 ROAD. ALSO CONTACT YOUR TAX OFFICE AS YOU MAY GET A REBATE OF TAX FOR THE PERIOD FROM OCT TO APRIL

  2. It's obligatory for the employer to provide you with a P45. Call them up and demand it.

  3. yes they should have sent you this as a matter of course!! did you claim any benefits in the interim? as dept of work and pensions may issue u one for coming off benefits
