Question:

Simple skating question...?

okay, so I have been learning (well I know how but I havent really practiced) going forward then switching to backward (on 2 feet).

Have you got any tips on how to keep your balance or make this easier. Also how to do it faster because I do it quite slow and I end up stopping.

(is it easier on one foot?)

  1. I found getting a bit of speed up made it easier as  I could keep my balance better and wasn't so likely to stop afterwards. I've just graduated on to one foot but it does take confidence and practice.  I seem to be happier turning to left rather than right.  Don't know whether anyone else finds this.


  2. Okay, I find it easier if you bend your knees and bring your upper body around first - so that the rest of your body follows it. Just start of stroking to build up your speed and then do a two foot glide (in this time I count to three to get ready for the turn), bring your arms around and your legs should follow.

    Three turns are hard at first - much like everything new, but once you get better at it, it's a piece of cake.

  3. I'm assuming that you are doing forward pumps on the circle and then turning on two feet, right? Before you turn go around the circle several times and get your speed up (make sure you are pumping fairly hard so you will start moving faster). Make sure that your arms are in the proper alignment with the circle and make sure to bend your knees, also use your arms to help you make the turn. When you learn the three turns once you get the hang of them they can be easier to turn on one foot. I use the three turns (the two foot turn on 1 foot) more than the two foot turn, but getting down the two foot turn will help you to get the three turn later on. Keep practicing and it will come!

  4. you are trying to perform the Skate Uk level 4 skating forwards and turning to backwards on 2 feet, first of all stand on the sport do one side at a time so put the right arm forward left arm back bend your knees and ankles well turn your head to look behind you and twist the hips round anti clockwise so hopefully your feet and body have done a half a turn. then try this morving, slow the movement down on how you perform it but not the speed you a fair bit of speed but not too fast to start with. ok into a 2 foot glide bend the knees keep feet together right arm forward left arm back turn head to look behind you and quickly turn to backwards then reapeat from backwards to forwards by putting right arm in fron then left arm back turn head bend the knees and turn. when turning from forward to backwards imagine you are going to step over something so when you bend your knees just before turning bend a little more and while turn come up ( as if stepping over something withput lifting the feet) and then bend again once turned backwards, also you can do this while skating near the barrier with the body facing the barrier and slightly brushing your hands on the top while moving to help your self and to get the feel of it.

  5. its easier if you go faster because theres more glide, and everythings easier on one foot when you advance in the levels (ex: spin, glide etc..)

  7. Well you just have to stand still and keep your arms on both sides of the boards evenly. Then you go faster by pushing the skateboard forward with your foot. Isnt that obvious?

Once you get to 3-turns (on one foot), I think they're a lot easier than two foot turns!  The best tips I have for two-foot turns is bring your feet as close together as possible...so that your ankles touch.  You want to make the surface area of your turn as tiny as possible.....so you can "turn on a dime."  I usually have my skaters practice these standing still first and we try to hold a mitten between our skates while practicing to get the point across of how close your feet have to be......like your laces are tied together.  Once you've got that, make sure to make your turn quick.  You see a lot of skaters slowly twist and end up making a big circle, but you want your turn to be a *snap.*  Use your hips to do this.  Just count it out: 1 - bring your feet together, 2 - bend your knees (don't lean forward) 3 - switch your hips.  Practice it with 3 forward swizzles going in, turn to the right, 3 backward swizzles, turn again to your right so you'll end forward.  Be sure to practice going all the way around to the right and left!  :)
