  1. Knot the shirts up, drop them into a washing machine with the appropriate dyes and let them run through a cycle. Let them dry, then run through the rinse again. That's how the hippies did it, forty years ago.

  2. The way you fold and rubberband the shirt is what makes the design.  So check out some samples.

USE RUBBER GLOVE, USE RUBBER GLOVES, USE GLOVES.

1)Soak the shirt is soda ash for about 30 minutes and wring out extra water (some people soak after the fabic is tied,)

2)lay on large leaf plastic bag and fold and scrunch the shirt and place lots of rubber band on it to hold in place. keep It is as flat as you can ...don't let it ball up

    3) put into a small plastic bag until you are ready to dye it.

    4) I use procion fiber dyes. The stronger the color you want the more dye you use. (natural fibers only --- will not dye synthetics)

    5) pull out each fabric item and place on clean paper surface and squirt with the dye (I get my hair dresser to save me all her old perm and neutralizer bottles and rinse them out)

    6) turn it over and squirt.(I use a stack of newspaper, just add another paper to the stack after each shirt....so you have a clean area. When done just roll the entire thing into the plastic bag )

    7) put back into the small plastic bag and let stand for 6 to 12 hours,

    8) rinse, remove rubberbands and run through rinse cycle in washing machine.

    9) dyes are permanent and stay.

There are tub methods but I don't like them, but I do sometimes, after step 7 I put the shirt in a black bath and let sit for 3 or 4 hours and then rinse, rinse, rinse. Strangely the black dye bath will soak into the  undyed areas only and your other colors will not take the new tub bath.  It's magic.

  4. a bunch?? 100% cotton or a blend? It makes a huge difference in the dyes you get.

the kids at school used a couple of tubs of koolaide to tiedye their t-shirts. But that can get really expensive in a hurry.

google Procion Dyes and see if you can't get them. They are less expensive in the long run if you want to dye a lot of stuff.

  5. I use Rit dye in the washng machine.  Tie your shirts, fill the tub of the washer with HOT water and add the dye.  If you're using the powder, let the machne agitate for a minute or so to make sure the dye is dissolved.  If you use the liquid, just let it agitate a couple times to distribute the dye evenly.  Add your shirts and agitate for a minute or so, then let the shirts soak until they are the color you want.  When I was tiedying, I would check  the color, then agitate for another minute and then let them sit some more.  If you are doing more than one batch, be sure to add more dye to the water, or your second batch will be lighter than the first.  When the shirts are the color you want (and remember, they look darker when they're wet), spin all the water out and run a rinse cycle.  Then untie the shirts and run them through another rinse cycle.  Dry the shirts thoroughly in your dryer.  The heat will set the dye.
