  1. Multiply the top and bottom by a^2.  This gives you

    [a^2 (1 - a^-2)] / [a^2 (1 + a^-1)]

    [a^2 - 1] / [a^2 + a]

    Factor to get

    (a+1)(a-1) / a(a+1)

    (a-1) / a

    (a/a) - (1/a)

    1 - (1/a)

  2. multiply both sides by a^2

       (a^2-1)/(a^2+a)

       (a+1)(a-1)/(a(a+1))

         (a-1)/a, or 1-(1/a)
