  1. Do you mean x^(3/2) + 2x^(1/2) - 8x^(-1/2)?

Also, do you mean "factor" instead of "simplify"?

You can factor out the lowest power of x.

    = x^(-1/2) (x^2 +2x -8)

    = x^(-1/2) (x-2)(x+4)
