Newcastle United defender http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Danny-c10193 Simpson has labelled Sunderland’s derby day equalizer as lucky after both rivals shared the spoils on Sunday.
Both teams were engaged in a tough contest when the Wear-Tyne derby took off on Sunday. Newcastle had taken the lead in the opening 10 minutes of the game thanks to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Demba-Ba-c10812 rebound, and fired in the bottom
corner.
The Magpies were in cruise control up until midfield enforcer Cheick Tiote was sent shortly after the first goal. The midfielder had made a rash and miscalculated tackle on a Sunderland player, and was shown a red card by referee Martin Atkinson.
The game looked dead after Newcastle were down to 10 men, and the Magpies had to play the rest of the 65 minutes with the numerical disadvantage.
Sunderland kept on pressing for the equalizer, but Newcastle stayed strong and defended solidly. Captain Fabricio Coloccini put up a man-of-the-match performance with his warrior like defensive display at the heart of Newcastle’s defence.
It looked as if the Magpies had once against successfully thwarted their rivals, but Sunderland got the equalizer in the dying minutes of the game. There was a touch of fortune about the goal as it deflected off Demba Ba’s head before going into the net.
Defender John O’Shea nonetheless took credit for the goal, and the Stadium of Light erupted with jubilation as the points were shared by both teams.
Danny Simpson, who recently made his return from injury believes Sunderland were lucky to have scored the goal in the manner they did.
"It gets to the point in a game when you do not think you are going to concede," he said. "You feel quite comfortable. Everybody seems to be doing their jobs and playing together.”
"For them it had to be something freaky like that. It was a fluky, lucky goal."
Meanwhile, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jonas-c18967 Gutierrez spoke about Tiote’s sending off, and believed that the referee made the right decision. Speaking to reporters, he said:
"I did not see the tackle, but I never want to speak about the referee's decision. If he thinks it was a bad tackle and a straight red it is, because it was.”
"If he thinks it was a red card, it is done, and we cannot do anything about it."
