Simpson leads, where as Tiger and Phil miss the cut at the Greenbrier Classic
At the end of round two, the leaderboard at the Greenbrier Classic looked a bit surprising. Red hot Tiger Woods, who recently over took Jack Nicklaus for the second highest PGA wins, missed the cut at the Old White TPC Course.
Other notable player who missed the cut is Phil Mickelson. It was the second successive year that Phil failed to go beyond the second round at the Greenbrier Classic.
However, at the top was Webb Simpson, the US Open winner who was leading the tournament by one stroke.
Simpson, whose participation at the Open is still doubtful, shot a bogey free second round to finish at 9-under. Simpson scored four birdies to finish round two with a score of 4-under 66.
The 2012 US Open Champion was extremely happy about his performance after the second round. He said, "You know, the best thing about today's round is no bogeys. I had chance and it was tough to let a couple get by me on the back nine, but it was nice to
birdie the last".
It was the 6 foot birdie putt on the 18th which Simpson had to pull off to finish atop the leader board.
Last year after round two, Simpson was leading the Greenbrier Classic but could not maintain his good run and ended up finishing on T9.
Simpson was well aware of his performance last year and when reminded about it he commented, "I was confident last year, I am confident this year, I do not think a whole lot has changed. I have learned a lot about myself in the final round since last year".
Nature had its role to play as well at the Greenbrier Classic, few players could not complete their second round and they will be the first one out on course in a bid to make the cut.
Charlie Beljan, the rookie, had shot 62 in the second round and finished T2 along with Jonathan Byrd, Jeff Maggert and Jerry Kelly at 8-under. Beljan was jubilant after his second round showing at the Greenbrier Classic.
“Today was the best day of my career,” Beljan said. “I look forward to the weekend. I am sure it is going to be a zoo”.
