Sims 2 for PC, question on Promotions

Question

On sims 2 for the PC, my sim got a job in law enforcement, & got to the top within 2 promotions. He's an elder, and began as a school crossing guard. I got him promoted to parking lot attendant.

Then one of those random "bonus" things came up that give you a situation to deal with at wrok. Well I picked the right option and BAM, promoted to security guard, automatically at top of the career track? Why is this?!

Security guard is not the top of the law enforcement career track. I think the top post is police commissioner. You have a ways to go yet. I know detective is in there somewhere.
