Sina Sutter wins Women’s 100m butterfly - 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial
Sina Sutter of SG Essen secured the gold medal in the Women’s 100m butterfly category, while competing in the open class of the 2011 German World Championships Selection Trial.
Sutter clinched the title of the Women’s A-Final, where she clocked a time of 59.01 seconds to touch the wall first. She was 0.72 seconds faster than her closest swimmer, Theresa Michalak of SV Halle, who pocketed the silver medal with a timing of 59.73
seconds. Alexandra Wenk stayed only 0.26 seconds slower from securing the silver medal and touched the wall for third position in a time of 59.99 seconds.
SV Wurzburg 05’s Lena Kalla appeared on the wall as the fourth finisher, posting a time of 1 minute and 00.66 seconds. The 25-year-old Iris Rosenberger ended fifth in the A-Final, with a timing of 1 minute and 01.29 seconds.
Sutter remained only 3.05 seconds away from the World and European record of Sarah Sjoestroem, who clocked a magnificent 56.06 seconds to earn the gold medal at the 2009 Rome World Championships. In addition, she stayed only 1.11 seconds slower from improving
the national mark of 57.90 seconds, set by Annika Mehlhorn at the same world titles.
With her astonishing timing, Sutter has claimed a spot in the German swimming team which will compete at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships.
Sutter gained a comfortable lead from her fellow swimmers in the first lap, where she completed her swim in a fastest time of 27.04 seconds. She was followed by Wenk and Michalak, who completed their laps in the second and third fastest spots, with timings
of 28.18 and 28.29 seconds, respectively.
In the next lap, Michalak geared up her swim and joined Sutter for a neck-to-neck race, where the fastest swimmer sustained her spot for the gold medal, clocking a time of 59.01 seconds. Michalak successfully overwhelmed Wenk’s effort to sustain the silver
spot in the butterfly event, producing a time of 59.73 seconds.
In the Women’s 100m butterfly B-Final, Paula Beyer of SC Magdeburg, conquered the fastest spot in a time of 1 minute and 01.44 seconds. CFL Gladbeck’s Jessica Steiger and SG Schwabmunchen-Nordlingen 06’s Elena Czeschner followed her on the finishing wall,
as the second and third fastest swimmers, posting a time of 1:01.53 and 1:01.55 minutes, respectively.
Daniela Wachtel of SG Neukolln e.V. Berlin and Sarah Silveira of TG Heddesheim settled as the fourth and fifth fastest swimmers, completing their swims in 1:01.74 and 1:02.53 minutes, respectively.
Sina expressed her happiness after collecting the award of the 100m butterfly event and added that she will perform to her full potential at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships, this July.
