Since I have an unknown infection, due to lab results, should I do a walk-in today to the doctor -OR-...?

Make an appointment for sometime next week? If I have an appt. I have to go in by 8, & wait ALL day if I do a walk-in. If I make an appt. I don't really have to wait so long.

I think the infection might be a sinus infection since I've been stopped up & congested. I also have a swollen lymph gland right under my right ear lobe. The blood test lab results say I have more white blood cells & platelets. Is it URGENT that I go to the doctor today, or do you think it would be harmless for me to wait it out until next week?

  1. Most infections are not medical emergencies.  Uncomplicated acute sinus infections and ear infections are good examples in that current research shows that using antibiotics for these infections does not lead to faster resolution of symptoms or clearanceof the infection.  Most can be treated with supportive care only (rest, fluids, antipyretics--tylenol and ibuprofen, and sometimes antihistamines).

If you are pretty sure you have a sinus infection, then it is likely ok to wait.

If you are unsure about the source of an infection, start to show signs of increasing severity (lightheadedness, backaches, visual or hearing changes, confusion, racing heartrate, or severe headaches), or you are unable to tolerate liquids or food by mouth, you should seek medical care urgently, in an ER or with your primary doctor.

If you have other medical problems like diabetes or heart disease, or ESPECIALLY if you have HIV/AIDS, cancer, or an ogan transplant, you should be seen right away.

  2. I would see a doc' rather soon ,one of my cousins had a really bad sinus infection and she lost her sense of smell ,not trying to scare you but better be safe than sorry.......really sorry.
