I don't mean just the subway but a train traveling from one city to another. (i.e. New York to Saint Louis)

  1. Doug-

The best advice I can give you would be to check Amtrak.

    www.amtrak.com

    Good Luck!

  2. The plane is still cheaper and faster than trains - long distance.

    Good Luck...

  3. We don't have trains around here that people can ride. You could do a bus or transit or cab... but all are about equal to just taking your car.

  4. I haven't, but I forgot trains exist. Does one really go St. .Louis to NYC? If so, I might got to NYC finally. I have always wanted to go.

  5. Um, many people have.

There is Amtrak throughout the US, and a few other intercity trains like Caltrain for example.

  6. me.

    oregon to minnesota,

however they have just raised thier rates quite a bit in the last two weeks

  7. I used to do that all the time in Japan and Korea.  It is truly a superior mode of transit to flying, particularly high-speed rail.

Rare was the time that I wished I had a car.

  8. I was doing it before the current gas increases !!

Since 1998, I commute via CalTrain daily 20 miles, and ride my bike to and from the stations.

And, since 2002, each month when I go up to baby-sit my brother's ranch, I take CalTrain and then the ACE Train the 120 miles from San Carlos to Stockton, California.  SURE it takes 4 hours instead of the 3 hours to drive... but a round trip ticket is $30, I don't have to deal with traffic, and I can work, read, or sleep during my trip.  The air fare from San Jose to Stockton would be $200 round-trip... so flying isn't ALWAYS cheaper.  Driving my 35mpg Celica would cost $50 just for the gas, not to mention wear-and-tear on the car and my nerves.

Just FYI, CalTrain ridership is up almost 15% this year, ACE ridership is up almost 50% !!

  9. I do not have a driving license because of the cost of getting one and the cost of having a car.

I live in the Netherlands where cars are and have been more expensive than in the USA, it will cost me a few thousand $ for a license alone.

I use the train for most long distance transportation, only fly when the train is not really a good option (like Amsterdam to England.)

Trains are a great way to travel, pity that the schedule in the USA is so poor when you want to travel any unusual route.

In Europe trains are faster than cars and on many routes cheaper too.

When you look at all costs involved in car travel, (tax, license, insurance, repairs and replacement) you can travel a long way by train before it becomes more expensive.
