  1. Did you know that you can convert your car in minutes to a water-running car?

  2. Ultimately synthetic oil comes from crude oil just like gasoline.  The former involves much more processing and reprocessing to end up with a lubricant with a different desired chemical formula and different operational characteristics.

  3. Have you checked out the price of synthetic oil compared to "dino" oil?

  4. Not sure what synthetic motor oil actualy is but I am pretty sure it is made out of some non renewable resourse.  It is not made to save oil, it is made to work better than the natural occouring lubricants.

They do make lots of sythetic crude oil out of the tar sands in Canada.  It require tons of natural gas and releases lots of CO2.

  5. Gasoline is already a substantially synthetic product.

There are ways to make hydrocarbons in the weight range of gasoline by several processes.  Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (F-T) is mostly used to make diesel fuel, but there is a process to make gasoline from methanol.  Methanol is easily synthesized from "syngas" (a mixture of CO and H2) and syngas can be made from natural gas, coal or biomass.

The main problems with synthetic gasoline are:

    1.  The expense of the industrial plant required to make it (much more equipment than refining oil), and

    2.  The energy losses in each process step.

Losses are a big problem.  Roughly half the energy is lost in coal-to-liquids conversions.  This also makes any price increase for the feedstock hit the product price very hard (if you think $110/barrel oil is painful, wait until you get $110/ton coal!).

Gasoline is just a means to an end (mobility), not an end in itself.  If we need to get energy to wheels, we can do quite a bit of it using batteries (a la the Chevy Volt).  This is far more efficient and eliminates many problems, not the least of which are noise and pollutant emissions.

  6. we dont do that because it will need government mandates to force change, and we know who owns the government.

  7. Out of what?

  8. then the gas would cost $6 a gallon

  9. It makes no difference . If u burn it it will produce CO2. All the alternative fuels are CO2 producers .
