  3. They changed the rule in 1989 in time for the 1992 olympics where USA destroyed the competition.

  4. As mentioned , the rules have changed.

    Jim Thorpe was stripped of his decathlon medal because he was paid to play in a baseball game......not even his sport .

    Even before the rule change, many countries were fielding "pros" in a sense.

    Athletes had "no show" jobs' or were "in" the military or customs agents.

    Basically they did nothing but train at govt expense & received stipends which amounted to salaries.
